REVIEW OF PRINCE ALBERT II

This review of Prince Albert II is based on feedback from Antarctica Bound customers, from the personal experience of a number of staff from Antarctica Bound, who have had the opportunity to sail on the Prince Albert II on different occasions in local waters and from independent information published for expedition cruise agents and prospective customers.

Prince Albert II, named after the current head of the ruling house of Monaco, the ship’s country of registry, was built as an expedition vessel with ice strengthened hull. The luxury cruise line, Silversea, later purchased it and undertook a comprehensive refurbishment to convert it into a luxury vessel with similar standards of comfort and service to other ships in the Silversea fleet.

All 66 cabins/suites on board Prince Albert II are well proportioned and of a high standard; the variations in grade are based on actual size and whether there is a balcony, window or porthole. Room service is standard and available at all times. Best use is made of space on board without compromising standards of service. There is one restaurant serving buffet or table service breakfasts and lunches and a la carte dinners; food and service are of the highest quality. There is a lecture theatre, a well stocked library, a lounge bar with humidor and a further lounge/observation deck.

In common with Silversea’s normal service levels, cruises/expeditions on Prince Albert II are fully inclusive of all food and non-premium liquor (although there is a high threshold before a premium standard is reached!).

Shore and ice excursions in Antarctica are taken on board inflatable zodiacs, which can access even remote locations. The small numbers on board mean that all passengers have ample opportunities to participate. At all times, there is access to experienced expedition staff with internationally recognised experts in wildlife, photography and polar travel. These experts offer lectures and commentary throughout the voyage and usually accompany shore excursions.

Other entertainment on board Prince Albert II is limited to an evening pianist, some ad-hoc home-grown performances by the crew and in-cabin satellite TV and DVD. After a strenuous day, there is however, the opportunity to relax in the small spa and fitness centre, the sauna or one of two decktop hot tubs.

There are recommendations for what clothes to bring with you. However, parkas are provided and on-ship attire is smart-casual.

Our review of Prince Albert II concludes that the ship is suited to those who want to experience all the aspects of an Antarctic adventure including ice, wildlife and the elements, combined with a stimulating educational and enrichment programme but always return to relax in the ultimate comfort and convenience.
