REVIEW OF MINERVA

This review of Minerva is based on feedback from Antarctica Bound customers, visits to the ship whilst in port in the UK by Antarctica Bound consultants and independent information published for cruise agents and prospective passengers.

Minerva was built in 1989 and was originally intended to be a spy ship for the Soviet navy; however, before it was completed, it was purchased by its current Monegasque owners for conversion into an adventure cruise ship. Its ice-strengthened hull makes it ideal for this purpose, especially on polar voyages in early and late season.

Antarctic Cruise - Antarctica Bound Antarctic Cruise SpecialistsMinerva is operated by Swan Hellenic and specialises in cruises to interesting destinations, often with corresponding lectures and educational programmes. It is not therefore a ship for those who cruise to enjoy lavish entertainment and glitzy surroundings. Although unsophisticated, the public areas are comfortable with a club-like style and there is a well-stocked library of books and journals of all types, including educational publications of academic standard. Lectures are held in the main lounge and, in the evening, there is usually a small band or classical ensemble.

Shore and ice excursions are taken on board inflatable zodiacs which can access even remote locations. The relatively small number of passengers (around 400) means that all have ample opportunities to participate, although not necessarily on every landing. A spacious open and covered aft deck area, walk-round promenade deck and pool provide ample space for outdoor lounging, exercise and viewing.

Eating on board Minerva is relaxed and food is of high standard and well served by attentive and friendly Filipino staff. There are also alternatives to the main dining room in the indoor/outdoor Bridge Café, mostly used for breakfast and lunch.

Cabins on the Minerva are in 5 grades and include 2 owner’s and 10 other suites, all on the Bridge deck. There are then deluxe, superior and standard cabins. All of these are comfortable and well-appointed but the latter two categories are small by modern cruise-ship standards at 17 sq.m. and 15 sq.m. respectively. Standard cabins also have only a shower room rather than full bath.

All cabins have hairdryer, cotton bathrobe, TV with music channels and VCR, separate lounge area with sofa, table & chair, refrigerator and binoculars.

Our review of Minerva concludes that the ship is best suited for mature (30-60+) couples and singles who seek comfortable surroundings and unsophisticated diversions rather than lavish entertainment but are active, enjoy mental stimulation and prefer to travel off the beaten track.
