At Sea, Cruising to Antarctica

After our first night aboard the Akademik Ioffe the sea swell was integrated into our bodies, for better or worse. There weren't too many of us at breakfast today, some confined to their cabin due to a spot of seasickness, some apparently still dozing thanks to the 'gentle rocking motion' of the ocean.

We were somewhat lucky. The seas were bouncy but not furious. Our day was spent scanning the horizon for whale blows, and watching the fantastic display of sea birds following the ship, albatross, petrel, prion. The wildlife watching was interspersed with fascinating and informative lectures: Shackleton's Endurance Expedition; An Introduction to Antarctic Sea Birds; Pinniped Identification (Seals!); How to take better photos; and after dinner, Antarctica - Where Are We Going?
